Dust suppression for South African mines and quarries

Mine and quarry dust in South Africa is a health, community and water question at the same time. Water mist at the source answers all three at once.

Source control is the health answer too

Dust that stays airborne is the fraction that reaches lungs and neighbours. Because mist meets dust where it is generated — crusher discharge, transfer points, screening — it removes the fine fraction before it travels, rather than wetting the ground after the fact. Our published performance figure for correctly designed source control is PM10 reduction of 70% or more.

Water is the operating constraint

Fixed suppression consumes 4–15 L/min and only while dust is being generated. Against repeated tanker passes across a haul road or a yard, that is a different order of magnitude — which matters on sites where water is pumped, bought or restricted. Where supply is intermittent, a storage tank sized from the duty cycle gives the system continuity and steadies the pressure the nozzles see.

Built for remote maintenance

Sites are remote and maintenance windows are short, so the specification is chosen for serviceability: stainless nozzles with ruby orifices (published service life 2 years or more), filter housings that can be opened and cleaned without tools, solenoid valves replaceable without cutting pipework, and a spare-parts kit shipped with the system. Interlocking suppression with crusher or conveyor starts means control follows production without anyone remembering to switch it on.

Questions

Common questions — Africa

Can the system handle dusty mine water?

It needs filtration — a 5 μm inlet filter as standard, and in many cases a coarser first stage ahead of it. Send us a description of the water and we will specify the filtration rather than discover the problem later.

Does it operate in high ambient temperatures?

Yes. The pump units and nozzles are rated for high ambient operation; the published operating range covers the summer conditions typical of South African mine sites.

What about community dust complaints?

Boundary dust is usually driven by wind-blown fines from stockpiles and roads. The combination that works is source control at the plant plus stockpile wetting, with a cannon on an activity or wind trigger for open areas.
