Dust suppression for quarries and cement plants in the Gulf

In the Gulf the water bill and the dust complaint arrive together. Source control with water mist is what makes both manageable.

Start from the sources

Walk the plant and list every point where material is dropped or crushed. That list, not the site area, is the specification.

  • Crusher discharge and transfer chutes: ring manifolds or lance banks aimed at the material stream.
  • Screening decks: hood plus misting; misting alone fights the dust after it is airborne.
  • Stockpiles and load-out: perimeter lines or a cannon, triggered by activity rather than a fixed clock.
  • Haul roads: keep these on a water cart or a dedicated road line — they are a different problem with a different duty.

Where the water saving is real

A fixed suppression system consumes 4–15 L/min depending on nozzle count and duty, and it runs only while dust is being generated. Compare that with tanker passes across the same yard, each of which puts down a much larger volume and must be repeated as the surface dries. On sites where water is trucked in or produced by desalination, that difference is the business case.

Automation pays for itself twice

Dust, wind or activity triggers do two things: they stop the system spraying empty air (which is where water budgets quietly disappear), and they produce a control log that is useful when a dust complaint or an inspection arrives. Interlocking suppression with the crusher or conveyor start is straightforward and is a common configuration on Gulf plants.

Questions

Common questions — Middle East

Can the system run on salt or brackish water?

It can be designed for it, with the right materials and a more frequent maintenance interval — but it must be specified as such. Tell us the water source at enquiry stage; this is not something to discover after installation.

How do we control dust during loading?

Loading is intermittent and intense, so a trigger-based cannon or a load-out line switched by activity controls it far better than a continuous fixed schedule.

What about dust from vehicle traffic on internal roads?

That is normally a separate measure — road wetting or a cart. Mist-based suppression is most effective at fixed material handling points.
