Cooling restaurant terraces and hotel courtyards in the UAE

In the UAE the season is long and the terrace is a revenue line. Misting is what makes those tables sellable from October through May — and, in the coastal months, what makes them dry rather than damp.

Design for the wind, not just the area

Coastal sites carry steady onshore wind, and it is what empties a misting layout if it is drawn as a uniform grid. We place a denser ring on the windward side, aim nozzles across the seating zone, and accept that downwind edges need fewer heads.

The humidity caveat, stated honestly

Evaporative cooling depends on dry air. Inland Dubai in May, with single-digit humidity, is ideal — a terrace can run at full duty and guests feel the difference immediately. On humid coastal evenings in August and September, cooling is materially reduced and mist that does not evaporate is felt as dampness. In those conditions we recommend zoning the system on a humidity trigger, running it for shorter cycles, and combining it with fans rather than trying to force the same duty.

What a UAE installation usually includes

These are the choices that make a terrace system survive a Gulf summer:

  • Zoned control by seating block, so only occupied areas run
  • Corrosion-resistant fittings and stainless nozzles for coastal air
  • A sheltered, ventilated pump position with drainage, not a dark cupboard
  • Filtration matched to the site water — municipal supply is normally fine, tank water is not
  • Access for maintenance agreed in advance, because a terrace system is serviced while guests are around

Questions

Common questions — Middle East

Will guests feel wet?

At 5–15 μm the droplets evaporate before they land, so the air cools and the tables, food and guests stay dry. Coarse spray is what wets people, and we do not specify it for seating areas.

How much water does a large terrace use?

Published consumption is 5–30 L/min depending on nozzle count and duty, and it is adjustable. With zoning, an 800 m² terrace running in rotating blocks typically uses a fraction of a continuously running system.

Can it be added to an existing terrace finish?

Usually yes. Tubing runs along walls, planters and railings; nozzles are fitted on slim brackets. Where a line has to cross finished paving, that is agreed at survey stage so it can be detailed properly.
