Outdoor cooling

Misting or fans: which cools an outdoor terrace better?

Fans move air. Misting removes heat from that air. On a dry, hot terrace the difference is 5–10 °C — but the honest answer is that the two work best together.

Why fans alone stop working in a heatwave

A fan cools people by moving air across the skin. Once air temperature approaches skin temperature, that mechanism fades: the fan is still moving air, but it no longer carries heat away. That is the point where terraces empty, and it is exactly the condition misting addresses.

What misting does differently

High-pressure misting puts 5–15 μm droplets into the air. They evaporate almost immediately, and evaporation absorbs heat — the treated zone drops 5–10 °C in perceived temperature. Because droplet size is small, the mist dries before it reaches guests, tables or food.

Cost, comfort and maintenance compared

Neither option is free to run, and they fail in different ways.

  • Running cost: fans are cheap per unit but multiply quickly across a large terrace; a misting system covers the same area from one pump, though it uses water.
  • Comfort: moving air feels good until humidity rises; misting keeps guests dry but requires zoning so nobody sits in a wet pocket.
  • Noise: misting has one quiet unit (≤65 dB(A)); fans add noise at every table.
  • Maintenance: fans need cleaning; misting needs filtered water and an annual nozzle check.
  • Best of both: run misting zonally, and use a few fans to carry the cooled air into corners where nozzles cannot reach.

Questions

Misting or fans: which cools an outdoor terrace better — the questions behind it

Will the mist make guests feel damp?

Not with the right droplet size. At 5–15 μm the water evaporates within a short distance of the nozzle, so the air cools and the surfaces stay dry. Larger droplets are what make people feel wet.

Does misting work in humid climates?

Less well. Evaporative cooling depends on the air being able to take up moisture; in very humid air, cooling is modest and fans plus shade usually do more per euro. Tell us your climate and we will say honestly what to expect.

Can misting and fans share the same controls?

Yes, and it is a common configuration: the same controller can switch fan circuits and misting zones, with temperature or sensor triggers deciding when each runs.
