Cooling restaurant terraces in southern Europe

Southern Europe now has the climate misting was designed for: dry, hot summer afternoons when a terrace without cooling simply empties.

Why this climate suits misting

Evaporative cooling needs dry air, and inland Spain, Italy and Greece deliver it through the summer. That is why a properly sized terrace system here can hold a seating area in a comfortable band through the afternoon rather than only taking the edge off. Coastal sites with onshore humidity see less, and on the most humid days the honest combination is shade, fans and misting at moderate duty.

Designing for a Mediterranean terrace

The layout questions are always the same, and they are settled at survey stage:

  • Where does the wind come from in the afternoon? Nozzles are aimed across the seating zone, with denser coverage on the windward edge.
  • Where can the pump and tank live — sheltered, ventilated, with a water point and drain?
  • How is the terrace zoned? Two or three zones let you cool only the tables in use, which is also how you keep peak-season water consumption down.
  • What goes in the sightlines? Tubing runs along walls, pergolas and planters; nozzles are small and low, not floating in the middle of the view.

Peak-season water and maintenance realities

August demand coincides with municipal pressure drops and, in some regions, restrictions. Published consumption is 5–30 L/min depending on nozzle count and duty, and zoning is what keeps it defensible: rotating zones use a fraction of a continuously running system. Where supply is uncertain, a storage tank and booster pump give the terrace resilience — and the same tank smooths the pressure your nozzles actually see, which is good for them.

Questions

Common questions — Europe

How much water should we budget per day?

It follows from area, nozzle count and how many hours per day you run. Send the terrace plan and your operating hours, and the quotation states consumption in L/min and a daily estimate you can check against your supply.

Can it be installed once and left running all summer?

It can, and we would rather you did not: zoning on a timer or remote app means you cool the terrace when it is occupied. Guests do not notice a schedule; the water meter does.

Do we need a licensed electrician?

Yes — the pump unit’s supply connection should be made by a qualified electrician to local requirements. We build panels for 230 V or 400 V as you specify.
