How to choose a misting system: a checklist that prevents expensive mistakes

Six questions, in this order. Answer them and the specification writes itself — and you will avoid the two failures that make most misting installations disappointing.

The six questions

Work through them in this order — each one narrows the next.

  • 1. What is the job? Cooling, landscape fog, mosquito control, dust, odour or humidity. Each has its own droplet size, and droplet size is the decision that determines whether the installation works.
  • 2. What area, and what shape? Area sets the nozzle count; shape (long and narrow vs square) sets the pipe runs and often the pump size.
  • 3. Water: source, pressure, hardness? Fine nozzles die from bad water. Filtration is specified, not optional.
  • 4. Power available? Single or three phase decides which pump units are possible.
  • 5. How will it be controlled, and by whom? Timer, remote app, sensors or PLC. Whoever operates it daily has to be able to change the schedule.
  • 6. Who maintains it, and can they get spare nozzles of the same type in a year? If not, the pipework gets redone.

The two failures that ruin most installations

Almost every disappointing misting system fails in one of these two ways, and both are specification mistakes rather than equipment faults.

  • Droplet size wrong for the job: too coarse for cooling (people get wet), too fine for mosquito control (the mist does not carry the repellent properly), too coarse for humidification (leaves get wet).
  • No filtration, or filtration nobody cleans: nozzles clog unevenly, the pattern degrades, and the system is blamed for a water problem.

Where to start

Use our free system selector: give it the application and the area and it returns an indicative configuration — system family, pump units, nozzle count, zoning and the published water and power bands. Then send the site details and you get a written, itemised quotation rather than a rate per square metre.

Published specifications used in this guide

Pressure range across applications60–100 bar
Droplet sizes1–15 / 5–15 / 15–40 / 10–50 μm
Coverage per unit300–15,000 m² depending on application
Control optionsmanual / timer / sensor / remote app / PLC
Filtration5 μm inlet filter
Nozzle life≥ 2 years; pump unit ≥ 5 years

Figures are our published specification ranges (or general market conditions where stated). Final configuration is confirmed per project in the written quotation.

Questions

Common questions — Buying guide

What is the single most important specification?

Droplet size. It follows from the application, not from the budget, and it decides whether the system cools, fogs, controls mosquitoes, suppresses dust or humidifies properly.

Do I need a bigger pump for a bigger area?

Usually more units or more zones rather than one very large pump. One unit covers roughly 500–2,000 m² for cooling and fog; above that, parallel units with zoned control perform better and are easier to service.

How do I compare two suppliers?

Ask both for the same five things: droplet size, pressure, nozzle count for your area, filtration specification, and the spare-parts part numbers for nozzles. The supplier who answers all five is the one to work with.
