Cooling and humidifying greenhouses in the Gulf

A Gulf greenhouse is a controlled environment fighting an uncontrolled one. Fogging is one of the few cooling methods that also conditions humidity, which is what the crop actually responds to.

Cool the air, and hold the band

Plants respond to the relationship between temperature and humidity — the vapour pressure deficit — rather than to a fixed humidity number. Controllers that read temperature and humidity and adjust each zone accordingly are what make fogging useful rather than risky; a system holding one humidity figure all day is wrong in the morning and wrong at noon.

Sand, dust and the filter you will forget

Gulf conditions put more suspended solids into your water and more grit onto every surface. Fine nozzles are unforgiving: a 5 μm inlet filter and a cleaning interval are specified with every greenhouse system, and where water is hard we recommend pre-treatment. It is worth deciding this at specification stage rather than during your first harvest.

The practical specification list

Send us: greenhouse type and dimensions, crop, target temperature and humidity (or VPD band), ventilation arrangement, water source and quality, and available power. We return nozzle layout by bay, zoning, filtration and consumption figures (published range 3–8 L/min), together with the measurements your controller should be set to at each growth stage.

  • Fog into the air stream, not over the canopy
  • Separate zones for bays with different crops or shading
  • Schedule by crop demand through the day, not a fixed clock
  • Keep a spare nozzle set on site — cheap insurance against a failed week

Questions

Common questions — Middle East

Can one system cool and humidify?

Yes — evaporation both absorbs heat and raises humidity, which is why the same installation is usually specified for both duties in the Gulf.

What about very hard water?

It is the main maintenance risk for fine nozzles. We specify filtration as standard and recommend pre-treatment where hardness is high; tell us the source and we will advise before the order rather than after.

Will fogging wet the crop?

Not at 1–15 μm, which evaporates in the air. Leaf wetness comes from coarse spray, and that is the specification to avoid in a greenhouse.
